Hiring isn’t just about filling an immediate need – in addition to finding a candidate who can perform the job, you also need to consider the longer-term outcomes. Part of an effective recruitment strategy is proactively building a pipeline of talent, and the best prospects are often your current employees. Therefore, it is critical when evaluating candidates to assess their ambition for professional development within your organization. Learn more with these techniques for gauging a candidate’s desire for career advancement during interviews:

Craft Your Questions Effectively

A helpful way to determine how a candidate views their long-term professional goals is to craft your questions effectively as a way to encourage them to open up naturally. Ask open-ended questions, such as where they ideally see themselves in the future, what some of their examples of short- and long-term goals are, or what they enjoyed most in their most recent job. The depth and authenticity of their responses can give you a sense of whether the role is just a job to them versus a more integral part of a career progression.

Evaluate Their Job Preferences

When discussing with the candidate what made them decide to pursue the job at your organization, carefully evaluate their job preferences to ascertain their likelihood of wanting to commit and grow in the role. Candidates whose responses emphasize wanting to learn and develop their skills or getting personal fulfillment or passion from their work tend to be engaged employees.

Look for Examples of Past Growth

The most likely indicator of commitment in the future is a demonstrated pattern in their work history, so look for examples of past growth. Assess their professional experience to determine if there is a pattern of advancing their skills, being given more responsibilities, or other instances that show overall ambition for their career.

Assess Cues Beyond Responses

You can often identify a candidate’s enthusiasm for a role by how they act, rather than just what they say, so assess cues beyond responses. Consider their body language, such as eye contact, smiling,  nodding, and excited gestures, as well as their tone of voice – they will likely be naturally animated and have their passion shine through if they truly feel excited about the opportunity. Additionally, the more sincere questions they ask and overall preparedness they demonstrate can make you more confident they would be a great long-term investment if hired.
